star Use New Video to Highlight Role of Ophthalmology

The Academy's EyeSmartâ„¢ public awareness campaign has produced a short educational video to address the all-too-common confusion among consumers about eye care providers: Who does what, and who should I go see? The five-minute video, called "Know Your Eye Care Team," uses "man on the street" interviews to emphasize the public's misunderstandings and lack of knowledge about the "three O's": ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians.

The video also features expert explanation by Andrew Iwach, MD, who explains the appropriate eye health services that each can provide and reviews the education and training that each receives. The video concludes by encouraging people to get more information on the EyeSmart Web site, geteyesmart.org. To share the video with your patients, direct them to the EyeSmart Web site, or download the video for use on your own site.

bullet Get Involved with EyeSmart

The Academy is calling on its members to help make the EyeSmart campaign a success. EyeSmart emphasizes the need for Americans to know their risk factors for eye diseases, infections and injuries, and the role ophthalmologists play in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of eye conditions. Get involved today.

Your participation is critical to ensure that as many people as possible become aware of the risk factors for eye disease, and to promote and safeguard the unique value of ophthalmologists in eye care. Promote EyeSmart in your office and in your community using the simple tools and materials prepared by the Academy.
